Phonetic Transcription

Convert English text to IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) notation with dialect options.

GenAm — rhotic, flapped /t/

How it works

This tool converts English words to their IPA transcription using a built-in pronunciation dictionary and rule-based fallback for unknown words.

  • Dictionary lookup: common English words are mapped to their IPA pronunciation for both General American and Received Pronunciation dialects.
  • Dialect differences: General American (GenAm) is rhotic — the /r/ sound appears after vowels (e.g., "car" = /kɑɹ/). Received Pronunciation (RP) is non-rhotic — post-vocalic /r/ is dropped (e.g., "car" = /kɑː/).
  • Rule-based fallback: words not in the dictionary are transcribed using English grapheme-to-phoneme rules. These are marked with a wavy underline.
  • Broad transcription: output uses phonemic (broad) transcription between slashes /…/ rather than narrow phonetic transcription […].
  • Privacy: all processing runs entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server.
